Leifers (Laives in Italian) is a small Italian town in the Bozen Province. It counts 17.168 inhabitants. It is located less than 10 km south of Bozen, at the confluence between two important rivers, the Adige and the Isarco
Because of its proximity to Bozen, Leifers knew a very rapid and uncontrolled development after the II World War. The state highway crossing the town, the SS12, has allowed and implemented this quick growth. At both sides of it particularly shops and services developed rapidly. Nevertheless their architecture is of poor quality. Moreover the lack of public spaces and the absence of a real city center, are at the origin of the missing identity that this town is suffering.
Furthermore the recent construction of a bypass tunnel (planned to directly connect Bozen to its province) has created a new situation of uncertainty for Leifers’ future development, but can also represent an occasion to envision other possible scenarios of development and improve Leifers‘ urban quality.
In the workshop, the students will have to propose new strategies of urban development for Leifers. The expected results of the workshop are thus not just to solve the problems connected to the street’s downgrading, but of course to envision a new future in terms of urban and regional development.
