Riccarda Cappeller at ETSA Barcelona for WAC Workshop Arquitectos de Cabezera

Riccarda Cappeller (LUH Territorial Design) is a lecturer at the Territoria Workshop Arquitectos de Cabezera in July 2022, with ETSAB (Escola Tècnica Superior d'Arquitectura de Barcelona) at MACBA (Museu dÁrt Contemporani de Barcelona)

The WAC, is an open workshop with a brief, but very intense research and practice face, aiming at developing small design projects that are realized as design-built experiments in the existing space. Initiated by Arquitectos de Cabezera, the workshop is run in collaboration with ETSAB, Barcelona and additional teaching staff as well as artists (f.e. Curro Claret). Moreover, through the PEI (Programa Internacional) of the Architecture Faculty from Pontificia Universidad Javeriana de Bogotá.), run by Carlos Hernandez, a large group of students from Bogota took part. This year's idea, was to work in the context of the MACBA, where the workshop took place. It is a contemporary art museum located in the heart of the historic city and in the RAVAL neighbourhood in Barcelona, which was the focus area of investigation. Durig the workshop, the question “how to open up the MACBA and foster more interaction with the physical, social and neighborhood environment”, was addressed.

Arquitectos de Cabecera (AC) was born through an academic project at ETSAB. Working from collective housing and public space in the existing city, it aims to bring the figure of the architect closer to the citizen, meeting their needs, and demonstrating that architects are still useful to society in the midst of the economic and social crisis. AC was born as a demand from architecture students to address 1.) an academic approach that connects more to reality and its problems 2.) a more social disciplinary angle, contextualizing housing and public space demands and 3.) a in depth reflection upon the practice of Architecture.

The contribution by Riccarda Cappeller M.Sc. M.A. to the workshop took part in the framework of the ERASMUS-STA program. After an initial presentation on “visual formats assembling complexity” (online in Spanish), she participated in developing the final installation at MACBA on site. The presentation included, 1.) an overview of current teaching and researching formats at LUH, 2.) artistic forms of research and ethnographic analysis and 3.) An additional task – to develop a creative and reflexive form of documentation, making accessible the thinking-making throughout the design and realization process in the workshop. This task was later transferred into a visual format for the final installation, that brought all the student works together.
