BACHELOR

In the bachelor's degree programme “Architecture”, students are introduced to the basics of urban design. To this end, the Department of City and Transformation offers three modules.

The module “Städtebau 2” is offered in the summer semester. It consists of a small urban design assignment, accompanied by lectures and exercises. Here, students examine a selection of topics that are of fundamental importance for the social, functional and aesthetic quality of urban spaces (e.g. parcelling and building types, ground floors and front areas, access, street space and routing, public spaces). The acquired knowledge is applied in practice as part of the design task.

In the winter semester, students deepen their basic knowledge in urban design in the module “Entwurf Stadt”. They do this by working on a comprehensive design task that is located in a real urban environment. After conducting an intensive analysis of the site, students develop individual urban design concepts for the improvement and further development of the area. The focus is on issues such as densification and structural enhancement, programming and revitalisation.

To accompany the module “Entwurf Stadt”, the Department City and Transformation offers the module “Architektur, Stadt und Gesellschaft”. In lectures, students gain insights into topics of social sciences, sociology and planning theory and deepen their knowledge in the form of exercises.

STÄDTEBAU II | How to Städtebau – A Waterfront Neighborhood

Bachelor | 6CP

The module „Städtebau II“ takes us this semester to a large industrial site in Misburg-Süd. This district in eastern Hanover is deeply rooted in the region’s industrial and port history. In the early 20th century, the Misburg Port served as a transshipment hub for cement and bulk goods and developed into a major trimodal transportation hub (water/rail/road) for the region around Hanover, Braunschweig, and Hildesheim.

SEMINAR | Das Leben der Straße

Bachelor, Master | 5CP

We want to gain an understanding of what Deisterstraße means to the people in the neighbourhood. Our task will be to explore the built environment, the social networks within it, and the discussions surrounding it, and how these elements interact. To this end, we will employ various methods to learn as much as possible about the lived experience of this street space. We will observe, take photographs, map the area, analyse our findings, engage in as many conversations as possible, and listen very carefully.
