MASTER

In the Master's programme „Architektur und Städtebau“, students deepen the urban design skills they have acquired in their Bachelor's programme. For this purpose, the Department of City and Transformation offers the module „Comprehensive Project,“ in which students address current issues and challenges in urban development. The project is based on an intensive analysis of the area and a theoretical examination of the specific challenges posed by the location. On this basis, the students develop solution-oriented concepts and work out urban design and development strategies. Despite changing locations and topics, all tasks offered by the Department of City and Transformation in the “Comprehensive Project” module focus on transforming existing building stock and urban spaces, with a particular emphasis on ecological, social, and cultural sustainability goals.

COMPREHENSIVE PROJECT | Safe in the City?

Master | 12 CP

Questions of urban security currently occupy a prominent place in public debate. Debates around crime, terrorism, and public order intensify already widespread perceptions of insecurity. On top of this, increasing extreme weather events, heat waves, air pollution, and the recurring threat of infectious diseases make urban vulnerability more visible—particularly in cities. The broader question of safety and security, therefore, goes beyond crime prevention and includes a range of concerns, from physical and psychological harm to climatic and public health risks.

SEMINAR | Das Leben der Straße

Bachelor, Master | 5CP

We want to gain an understanding of what Deisterstraße means to the people in the neighbourhood. Our task will be to explore the built environment, the social networks within it, and the discussions surrounding it, and how these elements interact. To this end, we will employ various methods to learn as much as possible about the lived experience of this street space. We will observe, take photographs, map the area, analyse our findings, engage in as many conversations as possible, and listen very carefully.

SEMINAR | Can It Work? Feasibility Study for Department Stores

Master | 5CP

To build or not to build? In most cases, this question is far from easy to answer. After all, whether a building can be constructed or converted depends on many location-specific factors: What conditions does the location offer? What types of use are in demand there? What is permitted under building regulations, and what is structurally feasible?
