SEMINAR | Das Leben der Straße
Bachelor, Master | 5 LP
Deisterstraße is a bustling commercial and residential street and a major thoroughfare in the Linden-Süd district of Hanover. We want to gain an understanding of what this street means to the people in the neighbourhood.
There are local groups campaigning for change. And there are voices that are sceptical, have different ideas for the future of Deisterstraße, or have not yet even considered that the street space could be different from what it is.
Our task will be to explore the built environment, the relationships within it, and the discussions surrounding it in their interplay. To this end, we will employ various methods to learn as much as possible about the lived environment of the street space. We will observe, photograph, map, analyse, conduct as many conversations as possible and listen very carefully.
We will make visible the information gathered on everyday routines, uses, networks of relationships, interests, and formal and informal areas of responsibility. The aim is to consolidate our findings into a ‘model’ – the term serves as a placeholder for a communication format we are to develop, which will enable us to engage with people about life on Deisterstraße.
Our joint research into the question ‘Who owns the street?’ will serve as a lesson in the local democratic dimension of urban design.
The course is being run in cooperation with the Linden-Süd Neighbourhood Management team at hanova WOHNEN GmbH and Deisterkiez e.V. The seminar takes place in and around Deisterstraße. The rooms at “WERKbank” at Deisterstr. 78 are available to us as a meeting point and workspace for our course.
