Kauf- und Warenhäuser im Wandel. Kleiner baukultureller Statusbericht

Department stores are the oldest form of large-scale retail. However, the success story of department stores is now a thing of the past. Structural changes in the retail sector and changing consumer behaviour have led to department stores losing significant market share and standing empty in many places. Given the architectural and symbolic significance of these buildings for city centres, the question arises as to whether and how they can be reused and adapted to today's needs.

The study first focuses on the systematic analysis of the architectural, cultural and structural characteristics of department stores and their significance for city centres. This is followed by an assessment of the various location and property types with regard to their potential for conversion. In order to identify a wide range of relevant properties, an international good practice analysis, in-depth case studies and expert workshops were conducted. In addition, around 30 property and concept profiles were developed.
