Bachelor, Master | 5CP

Geo-information systems (GIS) are computerized systems for collecting, processing, organizing, analyzing and presenting spatial data. In the field of urban planning, GIS has developed into a powerful tool that enables the handling of large and complex datasets. Therefore, GIS has become an indispensable tool in both professional planning and municipal planning practice.

The aim of the seminar is to get to know the basic workings of GIS as well as to acquire the ability to independently capture, analyze and edit including the visualization of simple spatial contexts. In an introductory part, the theoretical foundations of GIS are taught. Based on this, the participants will practice on the example of individual projects, how the required data is collected and how these can then be entered, evaluated and presented in the form of cartographic representations in GIS.

In the course of the seminar, the open-source and correspondingly freely available geoinformation system QGIS will be used. By using this software, participants of the seminar will be able to use their acquired knowledge outside the seminar and on their own devices.
