As part of the ‘Great Freedom No. 12’ project, students enrolled in the Master's programme in Architecture and Urban Planning have the opportunity to work on a self-defined task related to the city. The focus of the work is on developing a detailed problem statement that can relate to both a specific location and fundamental questions of architecture and urban planning. Based on this, the work takes the form of a design or a theoretical paper.

The aim is to deal with a problem in depth and to develop coherent ideas and perspectives from the insights gained. The format of the final project is to be chosen by the students in consultation with the lecturers. In addition to plans and models, written papers in the form of term papers, brochures or books, formats such as videos or websites are also possible.

Before the start of the lecture, a short exposé (ten lines to a maximum of one A4 page) must be prepared and submitted, which contains the working title and an initial explanation of the topic with the starting point and objectives. It is advisable to consult with a research assistant in the department in advance. Based on this, you will develop the detailed assignment in consultation with the lecturers by the start of the semester.

The ‘Great Freedom No. 12’ project can be worked on individually or in groups of up to three students, provided that the content and scope justify this. The theoretical or design work can serve as preparation for the Master's thesis.
