The “New Architecture” project addresses the brief for the 2026 Johannes Göderitz Prize.
Using the Munich district of Neuperlach as an example, we are examining the legacy of late modernism. Neuperlach was designed according to the ideas of the Göderitz generation. It is a green city, accessed via urban motorways and divided into functional zones. The district is now over 50 years old. One of the current issues is the transformation of Neuperlach as an office and administrative hub. With Siemens’ departure from the former Siemens site, large sections of the 370,000 m² of office space stand vacant. The laboratory and office buildings were designed for functionality and in no way meet today’s requirements for commercial buildings. At the same time, Munich has a high demand for housing.
The task is to address the urban planning of the Siemens site, transforming the monotonous and closed-off area into a diverse urban neighbourhood.
The competition brief encompasses both urban planning and architectural considerations. The aim of the competition is to develop a vision for the future of the site and a concept for how late-modernist architecture can be transformed to reflect contemporary ideas of diversity and openness. Participants are free to choose their own focus: from a sensitive intervention that highlights the possibilities for sustainable redevelopment, to an open urban vision that uses the existing buildings as a starting point for further thinking. The competition thus offers the opportunity to engage with the ideas of the city of the past and the present and to develop one’s own concepts from them.
Two symposia will be held to provide input. In connection with the project, the Munich excursion ‘Munich 70s’ will be offered. The excursion and symposia provide the opportunity to gain further perspectives on the topic and to network with students and stakeholders from other universities.
