PROJEKT LANG | THE THIRD LIFE OF LITTERRODE

Master | 12CP
The small working-class settlement Littererode was built in the early 1930s as a shelter for the homeless in Essen, and in 1980 it was saved from demolition and renovated by the residents. Now the settlement is again at risk of demolition by the local housing association, which wants to create more housing. Residents are bitterly fighting against it.That more affordable housing is needed is indisputable, but the way in which that goal is to be achieved is questionable. Is it socially sustainable to create more housing when a decades-old neighborhood has to give way to it? And is it ecologically sustainable to build new housing when an intact neighborhood has to be demolished?
In the first part of the semester, urban planning concepts will be developed, with the aim of creating new housing but demolishing as few existing buildings as possible. In addition, a desecrated church and other church buildings will be included in the planning. In the second part, urban planning, existing construction and/or new construction projects will be deepened.
The course is offered as an interdisciplinary project of the chairs Urban and Spatial Development (Prof. Rieniets) and Architecture in Context (Prof. Kums) and supplemented by a seminar of the Department of Sustainable Building Systems (Prof. Geyer)
